JOINT VENTURES AND STRATEGIC ALLIANCES IN EMERGING MARKETS

Abstract
Strategic alliances and joint ventures (JVs) can turn the frictions of emerging markets – regulatory barriers, fragmented distribution, and currency risk – into speed. Yet underperformance remains common. This article synthesizes fresh macro evidence on foreign direct investment (FDI), then develops three recent cases (China autos, India consumer, Ethiopia telecoms) to show where partnerships outperform solo entry or acquisitions. We translate those lessons into concrete design choices – economics and operating models – and close with an execution checklist grounded in governance and KPIs.
