Abstract
Drayzer evaluates the character’s behaviour and characteristics directly in his work. For instance, Dreiser describes Hurstwood’s depressed state following his breakup with Carrie as follows: “The hotel manager felt a certain interest in the man.” Hurstwood’s voice was so genuine that he felt compelled to assist him even though he had no idea where to place him. Sometimes, nevertheless, the author avoids describing his characters’ characteristics and objects in such a straightforward manner.
